One day a Frenchman went to New York. 

一天,一個(gè)法國人去了紐約。

He didn't know a word of English. 

他一句英文都不會說。

When he arrived in New York, he took a bus to a hotel.

當(dāng)他到了紐約，他坐了一輛公交車去賓館。

It was Sunday, and the Frenchman decided to go out for a walk.

這是一個(gè)周天， 這個(gè)法國人決定出去散散步。

As he walked along the street, he suddenly remembered that he didn't know the name of the street.

當(dāng)他沿著街道走的時(shí)候，他突然想起來自己不知道這個(gè)街道的名字。

So he decided to write it down. 

所以他決定把它寫下來。

He looked at the wall near the corner of the street.

他看了看街角附近的墻。

Then he saw some English words and copied them down in his notebook. 

然后他看到一些英語單詞，把它們抄在筆記本上。

“Now I know the name of the street,” he said to himself.

“現(xiàn)在我知道街道的名字了，”他對自己說。

“It will be easy for me to get back to the hotel.” 

“對我來說回酒店就容易了。”

He walked for a long time in the city.

他在城市里走了很久。

Then he felt tired and wanted to go back to his hotel.

然后他覺得累了，想回酒店去。

He took the notebook out of his pocket and showed the words in his notebook to a young woman.

他從口袋里掏出筆記本，把筆記本上的字給一位年輕女士看。

The young woman read the words and looked at the Frenchman.

這個(gè)年輕的女人看了看那些字，再看了看那個(gè)法國人。

She did not know what he wanted.

她不知道他想要什么。

Then the Frenchman stopped an old man and showed him the words.

然后，法國人攔住一位老人，讓他看那些字。

The old man did not know what the Frenchman wanted either.

這位老人也不知道這個(gè)法國人想要什么。

At last the Frenchman saw a young man.

最后，這個(gè)法國人看到了一個(gè)年輕男子。

He knew some French. 

他知道一些法語。

When the Frenchman showed him the words in the notebook and asked where the street was, the young man laughed and laughed, for there were the words in the Frenchman's notebook :  ONE-WAY STREET.

當(dāng)法國人把筆記本上的字給他看并問他街道在哪里時(shí)，年輕人笑了又笑，因?yàn)榉▏说墓P記本上寫著：單行道。
